The department was established in 1972 with its first Head of the Department, Prof. B. N. Nagnur of Karnatak University, India. In its early developing phase, Indian Co-operation Mission supported M.Sc. Statistics program with distinguished Professors Dr. P. C. Sharma and Dr. A. V. Kharshikar.

In due course of time, TU constructed Statistics Instruction Committee which later transformed to Central Department of Statistics. Over the past four decades, it has produced thousands of Master’s Degree holders and fourteen PhD holders in Statistics, majority of them working under different organizations and capacities and making substantial contribution in academic, government and nongovernment institutions and in the development process of Nepal.

Prof. Dr. Gauri Shrestha

The department has been served by former HoDs namely Prof. B. N. Nagnur, Prof. Ganga Shrestha, Prof. Mrigendra Lal Singh, Prof. Devendra Chhetry, Prof. Azaya Bikram Sthapit, Prof. Ram Chandra Singh, Prof. Shankar Prasad Khanal and Prof. Srijan Lal Shrestha. The present Head of Department is Prof. Gauri Shrestha.

In the context of changing scenario of education system at central departments of Tribhuvan University, CDS adopted the semester system in 2012 for 2-year (4 semesters, six months in each semester) Master’s Degree study in Statistics with some major changes in curriculum which was then revised in 2015 with 64 credits primarily to maintain uniformity amongst IOST central departments as regards to the allocation of total credits for the program, evaluation scheme and also keeping in view of the international norms of the semester system.  Many new courses were added since the introduction of semester system along with dissertation choice mainly to enhance the academic standards of M. Sc. Statistics program and to make the degree holders relatively more qualified and adapt more easily in their diverse professional pursuits.

We believe in maintaining strict academic calendar in M. Sc. Statistics program as far as possible and have been following this for many years especially since the introduction of semester system. We look forward in making students confident and believe in what they have learned and practiced during their study and not only M. Sc. Statistics degree holders. Students pursuing dissertation are trained to enhance their research capabilities. We also believe in building cordial and friendly bonding between faculties, administrative staffs and students.
